It’s the small things!!

Losing weight is not necessarily always about making massive changes, sometimes it’s the small things that can all add up to really help reduce your calorie intake or allow you to have more food! Like swapping fizzy drinks for their sugar free relations, 330ml (1 reg can) of Coca Cola is 139cals the diet version is only 1 cal!!! Of course some would debate it’s probably best to just avoid fizzy drinks altogether but if I HAD to have one I know what I would choose!  Sometimes foods like salads etc need to be made more interesting by adding mayo or adding tomato ketchup to just about anything! Its worth checking the calories and weighing these add ons -a tablespoon (15g) of extra light mayo is 11cals, Light Mayo is 40 calories and full fat mayo is 100cals! Massive difference and such an easy thing to just dollop on top without thinking of the consequences!

This morning  I had 2 boiled eggs and as we really need to go shopping we had ran out of the mini pitta breads that I would usually have.  I decided that it might not be so weird to have rivitas with my eggs (not too weird right??!!) interestingly instead of the 2 mini pittas I would normally have I could have 3 rivitas so on the plate it looked like I had a nice full plate which I love! Anyway I felt that 3 dry rivitas could be quite disgusting even if my eggs still had runny yolks so I reached for the lurpak.  I was about to smother them when I suddenly remembered I’m calorie counting and I’m photographing everything for you guys to see!! So I weighed out 15g which the lurpak info said would be 38 cals.  I toyed with not bothering, afterall 38cals could almost be an afternoon treat of a hilights hot chocolate! My mouth was telling me otherwise! Would the 15g be enough to cover the 3 rivitas?? Probably, just about, as a little scraping and especially if I turned the rivita over so that the butter didn’t sit into all the nobbly bits (another top tip!) I decided to investigate an alternative and scoured the fridge for inspiration- saw the extra light philli and read that I could have 30g for 33 cals. I weighed 30g out and it was a no brainer -a scraping of butter or a nice thick layer of philli on two of the rivitas and one plain one for dipping in the yolks!! Genius!! Of course the brain power that was used to get to this conclusion had probably burnt off enough calories to have had 5 rivitas covered in butter but that’s not the point!  Calorie counting is not always about stopping yourself from eating things you think you can’t have its about making choices based on doing the workings out and deciding whether you would prefer to stretch your calories out and have more for less! So next time you get on the scales and you’ve not lost weight (or lost less than you thought) and you are angry because you’ve tracked your calories and been ‘good’  ALL week, have a little think back to all those small little extras that you may have had, a few chips off your partners plate?, or a spoonful of their sticky toffee pudding and custard? or an extra dollop of mayo? It all adds up and remember this little saying that a very inspirational weight watchers leader used to say to me ‘if you bite it write it’!!

15g butter or 34g of extra light philli = 38 cals

Breakfast!

Breakfast!

Taking a bit of time to prepare and make time to sit and eat breakfast helps me to really appreciate it but it’s not always like today and sometimes I just grab the quickest easiest thing.

Museli/granola/banana/low fat fromage frais 276 cals

Museli/granola/banana/low fat fromage frais 276 cals

I mixed 25g alpen and 25g granola and layered it with 100g fat free fromage frais. I mixed a tiny drop of vanilla extract into the fromage frais to sweeten it a bit.

I tweeted today that I had to drink more water.  So today I had 2 of these, 4 pints of no added sugar vimto, 2 glasses of fizzy water and I’ve not stopped going to the loo!!

Today I have a cold and its freezing weather here like most of the UK.  I really wanted grilled chicken for dinner but it meant having to walk to the supermarket, I’ve been working from home all day I just couldn’t face going outside.  So we grabbed everything out of the fridge and my lovely hubby suggested he made me an omelette -he makes fab omelettes! Mine always end up more like scrambled eggs! This one looked like a pizza! It had 2 medium eggs, 20g of low low cheese, 2 quorn sausages, 1/2 onion, spinach and a sprinkle of ground chilli .  The cheese was put on top and he grilled it so it went lovely and crunchy.  I put a teaspoon of pine nuts on the top and had it with more of the mixed salad.

Don’t need to explain this one do I?! I’ve ended the day 5 cals under my allowance so that almost makes up for my 6 over yesterday!!! I’m a bit gutted I’ve not been able to do any exercise again today.  I know I only have a cold but I keep reading that you shouldn’t train if you are not well.  Hopefully that kiwi fruit I had today might help me to feel better tomorrow  😉 Another successful day calorie wise though and have had 60 new followers on twitter which is spurring me on to stick to this! So thankyou to anyone reading this! xx

Calorie Gallery!

Ok so this is the start of my ‘calorie gallery’! I’m going to photograph every morsel that is about to pass my lips and upload them every day for the week ! The camera never lies and it will hopefully help me to stay on track if I know I have to show the world what I have eaten!!! Will be also sharing some of the low cal/low fat recipes I use and tips on how I try to stretch my calorie allowance for the day! Here are today’s! :-

Porridge -280 cals with skimmed milk

Cadburys Hilights hot choc and mini marshmallows-45cals

Yes this is a hot choc!! I was cold 😉

These pies are AMAZING taken from the Hairy Bikers 'Hairy Dieters' recipe book. I normally don't eat pastry as its calorific & gives me a bad stomach. This isn't pastry -its pizza dough -genius!

Turkey mince, potato & veg pie with roasted veg and gravy- 330cals for the pie, 200 for veg & gravy

Low cal fizzy flavoured water with ice & lime

I told you I was a chocoholic!! I had cals left so I used them in a way I would have most satisfaction!! ;)

a very small square of chocolate 63 cals

Very small but needed and amazing!

So there you have it! You may have noticed some rather gorgeous photos of things that resemble chocolate here.  It’s not a mirage! I am a chocoholic and I have tried before to cut choc out completely but it made me miserable! So I do allow myself to have a small amount but if I don’t have the calorie allowance to have it then I won’t -honest!  I’ve slightly gone over my allowance of 1200 by 6 cals but my http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ app told me when I completed today’s calorie entries that if every day were like today I would weigh 7lbs less in 5 weeks time. Such a fab app to help with motivation and to make recording my calories really simple. Download it NOW!
Another day tomorrow, who knows what it will bring! Hopefully motivation, determination and a less achy body than I have today (after doing my kettlebell dvd but that’s a story for a different day!)

My Progress & Davina Intense Review

Well its day 15 of my Just Eat Less approach and I’m happy to say that I’ve lost 4lb so far so I’m pleased that it’s going in the right direction and its turning out to be quite easy to stick to.  I had one night off this week when I went out with friends and I just thought that if this is something I’m going to stick to I need to be able to carry on socialising and enjoy the odd night out/off the calorie counting. So out of the last 15 days there has been one day when I have eaten just under 2000 calories instead of 1200 I still lost weight, ok I may have lost more if I hadn’t shared a baked camembert, had moules mariniere and a 3rd share of a melting chocolate pudding (at least it wasn’t a full one!) and 3 glasses of white wine!!, but I’m more likely to stick to this as a long term thing if I allow myself the odd over indulgent day!

Another thing that has definitely helped me over the last few weeks is that I have been exercising which is clocking up extra calorie allowance per day that I have not been dipping into to allow extra food.

As I mentioned before I’ve been a member of a gym many times before and have had a lot of success with that but at the moment my lifestyle doesn’t really allow the time to fit going to the gym in.  I do DVD’s at home which is so much quicker as I don’t care what I look like, don’t have to allow time to travel to the gym and don’t waste time walking around the gym staring at equipment I don’t know how to use properly and waiting for other people to finish using it! I also find DVDs more motivational and encouraging than going alone to the gym.  They have the same effect on me as having a personal trainer or doing a class.  How does the DVD instructor always seem to know that exact point when i’m flagging or not getting my knees up quite high or fast enough??!!! They always say just enough to give me that push to make it through to the end of the workout or to make myself work that little bit harder!
So in my vast array of DVDs I have the following to choose from and I try to alternate them so that I don’t get bored and so that I don’t learn what they are saying off by heart!:-

Tae Bo- 1,2,3,5 and Get Ripped
Josie Gibsons 30 second slim
Kettlercise Just for Women
Zumba – cardio party, sculpt & tone, basics & 20 minute express, Live & flat Abs
Davina – Intense, Ultimate Target, The Power of Three
Gaynor Fayes -Fit Friends
Clubland Work It Out
Step Up Dance Workout
There are a few extras that my husband put into storage by mistake so he will be going to retrieve those next week! 🙂

I’m going to try and review the DVD on the day that I do it so that its a quick read.  Today it’s the turn of ‘Davina Intense’ that I did yesterday and later I will review the one I choose for today’s workout!

Davina Intense-Review
Beware this DVD will seriously effect your body (in a good way)!! Davina, with the help of her 2 personal trainers Jackie and Mark have done it again! In this latest of their DVDs it does exactly what it promises, it’s intense, but, as it is based on the principles of high intensity training/interval training, the intensity is short and sharp allowing time to recover and let your heart rate come back down so that you can put maximum effort in over a shorter period of time than other longer workouts.  It has 6 sections warm up, cardio box, toning, Abs, cool down & Stretch and a further more deep stretch section that you could do as a relaxation workout by itself.  They stress that you must do the warm up and cool down before attempting any other section which I agree is really important.  Yesterday was my 4th time using the DVD.  I did the warm up & stretch section, intense toning and the cool down and stretch which took about 45 mins in total.  The music tracks throughout the DVD, as on all Davinas DVDs, is good -funky, modern and gets you moving!  I love it when Davina goes off piste and puts some extra dance moves in because she is loving the music! The warm up is really good fun and Mark as always provides the entertainment with his attempts at ‘shimmying’! There is a good stretch too that believe me you will be thankful of as your calves will feel tight after some of the warm up moves!  The intense toning section is fab.  You will need low weights 1.5/2kg and a mat or towel for this bit, a glass of water and a mop down towel!  It mixes heart raising moves like high knees, bum kicks, jacks, fast squats into kicks, ab work on the mat and weights ensuring that you target all areas of your body.   I live in a semi detached house and luckily no one lives next door because they might wonder what the hell I am doing during this section of the workout -I make some very loud noises mixed with screams and the occasional ‘you have got to be kidding me’  There are rest breaks in between the bursts of high intensity moves where you either get time to ‘catch your breath’ (needed) or a few minutes to walk around let your heart rate come down, stop feeling like your going to puke and have a drink of water (needed like you have never needed anything else before in your life)!!  However, please don’t be put off by any of what I have said! I say all of this with a smile on my face because I feel proud that I have got through it all a few times now and have still lived to write this blog! I know that this type of training works to create muscles that you never thought you would be able to see and burn fat/calories as its similar to the style of training inflicted on me by the personal trainer I used to have. The main advantage that this DVD has over a personal trainer is that I don’t need to re-mortgage my house for the privilege!  The cool down is exactly what it says and the stretches are a-m-a-a-a-z-i-n-g they make you realise all the areas of the body that have worked hard and you know you will feel toned but lean and have less pain by doing them!  I felt a bit lethargic before I started and could have easily sat on the couch all day watch crap tv but I pushed myself to do it and afterwards I felt energised, toned and really good about myself. So I would like to give this DVD a 10/10 for its warm up, toning and cool down sections.  I will review the other sections on the days that I do them!  Thanks Davina, Mark and Jackie! x
